Look what WendyKnits is doing!

Knit From Your Stash 2007!

1. The Knit-From-Your-Stash-a-Thon will start January 1, 2007 and run through September 30, 2007 -- a period of nine months.

2. We will not buy any yarn during that period, with the following exceptions:

2.a. Sock yarn does not count. What? You think we are made of stone?

2.b. If someone asks for a specific knitted gift that we really and truly do not have the yarn for, we may buy yarn to knit that gift.

2.c. If we are knitting something and run out of yarn, we may purchase enough to complete the project.

2.d. We each get one "Get Out of Jail Free" card -- we are each allowed to fall off the wagon one time.

3. We are allowed to receive gifts of yarn.

4. Spinning fiber of any sort is exempt.

Now, I have a few personal qualms (some of which start with WHAAAT! ARE YOU CRAZY?) such as the nine month stretch. Wendy and her friend are planning to go to Stitches East, so that is the reason for the time period. I am not going to Stitches East. I am, however, planning on going to both the Knitter's Frolic in April, and the Knitter's Fair in September.

Next qualm, sock yarn (2.a). I have a lot of sock yarn. A LOT of sock yarn. Really NICE sock yarn. I would personally include sock yarn in my rules, in the interest that I actually use some up. I will replace sock yarn with deeply discounted quality yarn. If Elsebeth Lavold suddenly discontinues Silky Wool (gasp!) I will not be stopped from hoarding.

I am keeping the spinning fibre clause, of course, because my stash of that is completely under control. I am only one project ahead with a wee box of plain fibre for testing techniques and teaching others (what, you think I am letting others touch the Fleece Artist? Ha.)

So, any suggestions, all you knitters out there? I know that most of my readers do not have a monster-stash like I do, but any comments would be appreciated. I will post a revision of these rules when we have hammered out the details. So go on, hammer!

You're on your own, kiddo!
As it is I try to knit out of my stash whenever possible and it is definitely under control. At least 50% of the time when I buy new yarn it's to start a project immediately so it doesn't add to the stash.

I think that it's a good idea to try to destash, at least to keep things under control. And you do have lots and LOTS of lovely stuff which is just sitting there, unknit and unloved. But I think you should amend the rules.
How about 3-4 months instead of 9? That should be less daunting. And maybe make the "Get Out of Jail Free" card be usable once a month. I've read destashing websites and they are allowed to go nuts once a month so they save up all their desires for that one day.
I think with those modifications this might actually be doable. And though I will not be joining you per se, I will be cheering you on from the sidelines and trying to use up my stash too.

I don't usually buy yarn more than once a month already... and I think I have enough yarn to last the 9 months... But I don't want to use it all up, I like having a world full of possibilities at my fingertips. But the sock yarn is getting out of control.

Oh, and my stash may be unknit, but it is NOT unloved :p

This will need some fine-tuning before January!

nine months is a long time, but with a stash like yours i'm sure you'll be able to do this no problem, even without the tweakings o' the rules. and wow, does that spinning fibre rule give you a lot of wiggle room. there's nothing i love more than hoarding spinning fibre...sometimes, somehow i find it even more satisfying than hoarding yarn. sometimes.

I have been good about hoarding spinning fibres, that is why I am leaving that exemption in. I only have 100g of Wenselydale-Teeswater awaiting me, and some odds and ends from needlefelting.

I love virtually all the yarn in my stash, I just want a chance to USE it! Aside from the trophy yarn, of course.

I so need to do that! I probably won't manage it, but I'm going to try not to buy any more full price yarn until my stash is down to reasonable proportions, and only buy sale yarn if it's such a bargain I couldn't leave it there (like the Hipknits sale).

Ah, no full price yarn is a good idea!

I am aiming to destash in quite a few areas. Knitting, sewing fabrics, paper. Of course, there is the chance that I will have to buy more bits to go with what I am using up. Dolls take very little of the stash and artists trading cards even less.

Obviously you need a more consumptive hobby?

(good to see you back!)
